-Oriwu College student emerges third, best debater
Two Students from Education District II have once again demonstrated excellence as they took First and Third positions at the 2024 Jendol Annual Debate Competition.
The Jendol Annual Debate Championship (JADC), is aimed at promoting public speaking and recognising outstanding senior secondary school students across the six Education Districts of Lagos State.
The competition also seeks to identify the best speechmaker and debate champion to improve public speaking skills, enabling them to become well-rounded intellectuals with unrestricted expression with a championship focus on public speaking, English Language proficiency, and Logical Thinking.
Out of the six finalists for this year’s competition, Oshibamowo Mercy Kehinde of Ajegunle Senior High School won the 1st prize with her outstanding performance, earning a cash award of ₦800,000 and a scholarship to study at the university of her choice, while Oriwu Senior Model College, Ikorodu, secured the 3rd position through the brilliance of Aluko Rhoda, who received ₦250,000 and a university scholarship. She also clinched the coveted Best Debater Prize for 2024, with an additional ₦100,000 cash reward.
The championship, which began with 350 participants from 200 exceptional public senior secondary schools across Lagos State’s Education Districts I, II, III, IV, and VI, culminated in a heated debate among six finalists.
The participants fiercely debated the topic, “Students below 18 years should be restricted from using AI-powered technologies to prevent cybercrimes and foster critical thinking.”
Expressing her delight at the remarkable achievements, Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary, Education District II, Mrs. Anike Adekanye lauded the students for their intellectual prowess and unwavering commitment to excellence.
Mrs. Adekanye attributed their successes to the enabling environment created under the able leadership of the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, and the Honourable Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun.
She extended her heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Governor for his immense contributions to the development of education in Lagos State and for providing the platform that allows students to thrive.
Mrs. Adekanye also commended the principals, staff members and students of the winning schools for their brilliance, dedication, and commitment to the winning culture of the district. She highlighted how Education District II has continued to break records and achieve remarkable milestones under her stewardship, including fostering a culture of academic excellence and innovation.
